ERCP overview

ERCP and bile duct care

ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography) uses a side-viewing endoscope and X-ray to treat problems of the bile ducts and pancreatic duct — for example stones, strictures, or some leaks. It is a therapeutic procedure, not a routine screening test.

You will usually fast beforehand and receive sedation. The endoscopist injects contrast to outline the ducts and may perform sphincterotomy, stone extraction, stenting, or other steps as planned. Risks include pancreatitis, bleeding, perforation, and infection; these are uncommon but discussed before consent.

ERCP is offered when clinically appropriate at centres with experience. Dr. B. Varun Rao is a therapeutic endoscopist; suitability for ERCP is decided after review of imaging and overall health.
