Gallstones form in the gallbladder from cholesterol or pigment components. Many stones cause no symptoms and are found incidentally; others trigger biliary colic — severe upper abdominal or right-sided pain after fatty meals — or complications such as cholecystitis, cholangitis, or pancreatitis.
Ultrasound is the usual first imaging test. Treatment depends on symptoms and complications: observation for silent stones, cholecystectomy for symptomatic gallbladder disease, and sometimes ERCP if stones are in the bile duct. Your surgeon and gastroenterologist coordinate the plan.
Nithya Gastro and Liver Clinic evaluates jaundice, abnormal liver tests, and bile duct issues related to gallstones alongside general GI and liver care.
